Reuben made his showing debut at the Golden State Horse Show at Leone's Equestrian in Elk Grove, CA.
He started out in Baby Green, Low, and Schooling Hunters to help him get into the show groove and learn the technical aspects of his job. Reuben is ridden in competition by Carol Wright of Melodic Farms. Carol made the decision to enter Reuben in a couple of Level 0 jumpers classes later in the week, just to see how he handled a little more speed and more challenging fences. The waterloo didn't phase him a bit, nor did the rain or high winds, and he placed in two of three L-0 classes.
Reuben placed in 9 of the 14 classes in which he was entered, and was most often in the top half of the class. He earned 3rd placings in Schooling Hunters and Low Hunters Under Saddle, beating out a horse that has won at Pebble Beach in that class. Overall he comported himself with confidence and dignity and was a pleasure for Carol to ride and compete.
The course of action with Reuben is to let him learn the job of showing without overfacng him, since he is still a baby. As he gains experience he will tell Carol and his trainer, Sue Lightner, where he wants to go. So far, he seems to like the bigger fences and scarier challenges.

Reuben's next show was the following week; the Pickwick Equestrian at Brookside Equestrian Center in Elk Grove, CA. Sue and Carol decided to move him up to 3', so he was entered in Low and Pre-green Hunters, plus Hunters Under Saddle (because he moves so pretty!) The extra height improved his jumping style (he just canters over anything lower) and he got more of his lead changes. The show offered greatly improved weather and many more entries. Reuben placed in half his classes and won Hunters Under Saddle - his first blue ribbon under saddle! Of course I was ecstatic. Sue said "When he gets his changes, he'll always get the blue!" As usual, Reuben was a perfect gentleman the entire week.
Reuben is back in Modesto with Sue where he will continue to school his flat work and breed a few mares, then off to Pebble Beach in July!
